• CD Review: Keys & Chords / Holland
Already at a young age, it was clear
that Chantal Ambroise had an enthusiasm for music. She had
a turbulent youth and started studying jazz at a young age,
not only inspired by the jazz greats of the past, but also
R&B, alternative rock and soul.
In 2000, she started writing
her own songs and by 2004, she was fronting her own funk
& soul band, Alto Reform School. Afterwards, she was featured
with the Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra in their show 'A Night
at the Rock Opera,' in included the music of The Beatles,
Queen and 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' Chantal could now embrace
several styles of music.
After the show's run, she moved
to Seattle, WA and returned to her first love - jazz - and
joined the all-female big band, Mood Swings. She also guested
on Oakland, CA's progressive hip-hop group act Triple Ave.'s
album 'True Working Class Heroes.' At present, she is the
lead singer with the R&B/soul/funk band The Rockin' Soul
Horns. She is busy!
'Incredibly Human' is her debut
album featuring ten neo-soul songs. She wrote all the lyrics
and she paints with a beautiful voice. This CD has already
gotten good reviews, and she has even been compared to well-known
soul superstars.
Highlights: 'Come On' (up-tempo
dance track), 'Enough (gentle, mid-tempo - it pleased me),
'Sugar High' (head to the dancefloor), and the title track
(a ballad, showing her slow side). The rest of the CD varies
from up-tempo to mid-tempo songs.
Chantal has a beautiful
musical future for herself. I am curious as tp what she
will do further.
